Breville Barista Express

Based on 498 comments across 4 communities
TL;DR
Most owners love it as a value-packed starter machine that makes cafe-quality drinks and lasts years with basic maintenance. The big recurring gripe is the built-in grinder, which many find inconsistent and too weak for lighter roasts, so a lot of people eventually pair it with a separate grinder. Owners also report a common auto-stop/flow problem where the machine won't stop extracting, plus a steam wand that's slow and underpowered, and scattered reliability issues like solenoid, gasket, and group-head failures over time.

51% of 498 verified owners recommend the Breville Barista Express.

My biggest issue was the steam wand power. I always felt it was lacking and took way too long to properly steam the milk.

I ended up returning it

you’re playing on hard mode as the Barista Express steam wand is hot garbage. It’s not powerful enough so it’s extra hard.

They have both paid for themselves several times over.

I have the breville barista express. While it is well under your price range, I find the grinder to be a bit inconsistent. For example 18g in will often grind out anywhere from 17.8-18.2g. This just makes it a little inconsistent and the first thing I’d upgrade would be my grinder

Had mine for little over 5 yrs. No issues so far.

I have a Lelit Bianca V3 and love it. I love the flow control, DB, PID, adjustable water tank, and the finish is beautiful. I normally only do a couple shots a day, but it can handle a lot more. Coming from Breville Barista Express before this.

In the past I’d owned a Breville Barista Express. It was good until it broke (plastic housing while I was replacing a solenoid) and it ended up as landfill.

I do feel like coming from a breville barista express, this one makes a more consistent coffee and milk frothing is not as much as a guessing game

I bought a breville barista express on sale, and it works, but it's my biggest regret with the hobby. I fairly quickly ended up buying a return df64, which defeated the purpose of the express and quickly started seeing it's short comings.

nothing compares to the taste of the espresso that this machine made.

I used to own a Breville Barista Express and enjoyed my espresso shots, but I feel like french press and pour overs allow you to taste the coffee in a nicer way

have also realized that I had been making crappy espresso for the last 6 or 7 years with the Breville.

Honestly I’d buy a used breville barista express. It’s what I have, it’s makes great coffee if you use fresh beans. Regular store bought beans and the grinder will not grind find enough.

I have the express and I absolutely love it. It makes unbelievably good coffee.

You're correct about the Breville Barista Express. It's garbage. Avoid it like the plague.

Wish, albeit not strongly, that I’d not bought a combo grinder/brewer. Breville Barista Express, in my case. Ended up upgrading to a DF54, so the built-in grinder largely sits idle

Yea I spent on a Breville Barista Express right before COVID and it’s been a great machine. I use it daily. The only time I buy coffee now is when I’m traveling.

I went through 4 breville barista expresses in 5 years. At least one was under warranty.

Started with a breville barista express. Then got an open box Lelit Mara. In hindsight the Breville covered everything I needed, probably didn’t need to try a different machine

Brewing on Breville Barista Express and recently upgraded to bottomless portafilter from Ikape to check for potential channeling. Turns out I was doing okay regardless :)

I have the Breville Barista Express, and after learning for about 18 months, the grinder was the main thing holding my progress back. I liked the machine, and did end up getting a DF64 v2.

Had the breville barista express and wouldn't say that the breville was consistent when it came to the volume after pulling a shot. The inbuilt grinder was ok. The pressure guage was no longer functioning even with double sided basket. At some point in time I was dreading it.
