Penn Battle IV

Based on 12 comments across 1 community
TL;DR
Owners overwhelmingly treat the Penn Battle IV as a tough, dependable saltwater workhorse that punches well above its price, landing sharks and rays off the surf and holding up season after season. The few gripes are minor: sand can occasionally get into the drag after a dunking, and the larger sizes can feel a bit heavy over a long day. For most anglers it's an easy recommendation, though some serious big-game fishers still reach for a higher-end Slammer.

I’ve also got a Penn Battle IV 5k series that I’ve used for a few seasons and it’s holding up great.

I have a Penn Battle IV and I find if I dunk it even briefly in surf I have to let the drag all the way out and then strip a bunch of line, then slowly tighten the drag down again otherwise the drag will start to tighten itself as it pulls out. I feel like it is basically clearing the sand out of the drag itself and leaving it in the spool.

I have that exact rod and reel combo and it’s extremely strong and decently castable, and I’ve already caught some sizeable Leopard Sharks and Shovelnose Guitarfish off the surf.

I have a 9'0" Medium Fast Penn Battalion, with a 4k size Penn Battle IV. It is my perfect, all-around combo. I've gotten a few other setups since then, and nothing beats it in versatility.

I use a Penn Battle IV 3500 and 2000, having previously used a 4000 I'd never go back to it. Over a few hours fishing your arms will feel the difference.

I’ve been using Penn Battle IV 4000 and Penn Battalion II 10’ for plugs and tins, pretty good combo. 20 # braided. Unless you are really beating up that reel every day seems pretty unlikely to blow out gearing.

I just got the new PENN Battle IV combo, great quality for its price. I did the 9’ 6000 size.

Have a pair of them, last years (III) and the IV. Both are the best reels I've ever used for inshore saltwater fishing!

The Penn Battle 4 combos are awesome, get the correct size for your application though. I am a big fan of this combo, I have a 2000 on a medium light rod (the combo penn rod and reel) and a 10000 on a heavy surf rod that’s a diawa. I’m considering getting another
