Owners praise
  • Owners repeatedly call it a "tank" — strong enough to land leopard sharks, rays, and shovelnose guitarfish off the surf without flinching.
  • Widely regarded as outstanding value, with several owners saying it's a "badass reel for the price" and great quality for the money.
  • A dependable saltwater workhorse for inshore and surf fishing — owners report it holding up great over multiple seasons.
Owners complain about
  • A few owners note sand can work into the drag after dunking it in the surf, requiring them to back off and clear the drag or pull the spool to clean it.
  • The larger sizes carry some weight, and at least one owner found a bigger model tiring on the arms over a long session.

The 4000 works perfect for me.

I would recommend this reel to beginners.

I have a Penn Battle IV and I find if I dunk it even briefly in surf I have to let the drag all the way out and then strip a bunch of line, then slowly tighten the drag down again otherwise the drag will start to tighten itself as it pulls out. I feel like it is basically clearing the sand out of the drag itself and leaving it in the spool.
