Seachem Tidal 55 Power Filter

Scored on 11 verified owner verdicts, from 15 comments read across 1 community
TL;DR
Most owners of the Seachem Tidal 55 are satisfied, praising its ability to self-prime and pick back up on its own after a power outage without needing to be reset by hand, and several call it the best hang-on-back filter they've owned and worth the higher price. A meaningful minority who also run AquaClear filters push back, noting the AquaClear is quieter, holds more media in a bigger chamber, and comes apart more easily for impeller cleaning. A smaller number report louder operation than expected, including one owner who couldn't resolve a persistent slurping noise despite cleaning and new parts. Overall the consensus leans positive, with noise level and cleaning convenience being the main points of contention.

45% of 11 verified owners recommend the Seachem Tidal 55 Power Filter, based on real owner verdicts aggregated from Reddit, enthusiast forums, and YouTube.

Who it's for
A great fit if
  • Owners who want a HOB filter that self-primes after power outages, no manual restart needed
  • Tanks up to ~55 gallons needing a large media basket that's easy to customize and layer
  • Owners okay leaving the filter running long-term, since some go a year or more between cleanings
  • Buyers willing to pay a premium price for a filter owners call the best HOB they've used
Look elsewhere if
  • Noise-sensitive owners, since some units develop an unresolvable slurping or humming sound
  • Owners who prioritize easy impeller disassembly, since AquaClear is reported as simpler to take apart
  • Owners who routinely pull the filter for rinsing, since removal can cause gunk to spit back into the tank

The Tidal 55 did not work well for me. It developed a loud slurping noise I could never resolve with cleaning and new parts.

anytime I don’t remove the filter and dump/rinse it then it spits gunk back into my tank. It seems like it ruins having the filter all together at those times.

I have a 55 and a 75 for over a year now and they are great, quiet and they do prime themselves after a power outage.

I think it fits more than enough filter media for any tank under 55 gallons, and the basket is a decent size to customize/layer it.

I have a tidal 55 on a 40 breeder and it’s the best hob filter I’ve ever owned. Well worth the higher price tag.

It is not perfect, but I can leave if for a weekend and not worry about it restarting if power goes out.

like the aqua clear better mainly for the bigger media chamber and shape of the chamber

all my Tidals have been quiet (I have 55s and 75s), other than the one new one that fixed itself

I had an AquaClear and couldn’t hear it at all but this one I hear.

I have the 55 and 75, both are great.

AquaClear is easier disassemble for a cleaning impeller than Tidal.

I have that happen sometimes when mine is tuching the wall or off balance on the glass

Why do you take off the filter to rinse the media? The purpose of the basket is exactly that. To be able to take the media out and leave the filter on the tank. It also provides an anti-rise benefit in that the basket has a lock and the bypass prevents the media from rising.
