“I too was getting great readings from mine, to then get it checked by my LFS who told another story.”
“api test kit was really shot for me. Try redsea test kit.”
“I use the API Freshwater Kit to measure my saltwater tanks during cycling as well. There's no point in buying expensive test kits for something you rarely use.”
“however I wouldn't recommend buying the whole kit”
“They know we're going to run out and either pay $20 for just the nitrate or buy a whole new kit.”
“Very accurate testing shows u exactly what you need to know.”
“still worth it with the amount of tests you get”
“I prefer the API liquid test kits.”

“With the nitrate, re test, shake each bottle for at least 30 secs and then shake the test tube for at least a min… it can be suspect if not shaken enough… api test is known for it.”
“You can use the Ammonia, Nitrate, and Nitrite in freshwater API kit for your saltwater tank but you need to look up the saltwater card. So the liquids are the same but the color card is different.”
“At least in the US the pricing is such that if you need to replace about 2.5 test its just cheaper to buy a whole new test kit. However if it was 93 USD a kit I would definitely be looking for alternatives.”
“i tried this for a bit and always seemed to get inconsistent results. however, it is reliable just for checking if someone is 0 or >0”
“I’d seriously consider picking up loads of plants but I know these aren’t always for everyone but they help the process, water quality and most importantly of all, the fish. If your tab water ph is neutral then water changes will help lower your ph as well.”
“I wouldn't worry if I were you, you're on a great track per my eyes.”
“Just know for the future, you can buy parts of the Master API kit separately if you run out of only one test, Since I still have like 2 bottles of every other API test except nitrate that I test more often. So I buy them when it's on clearance if I can. It's sooo much cheaper than 35 bucks every 3 months 😭”
“Make sure you shake the bejeezus out of nitrate #2.”
“You can test water you know has no ammonia(like bottled water) for a direct comparison. Having them side by side helps reassure me. I have the hardest time deciphering nitrite blue when it starts to go purple. I will test 4 times before im sure sometimes. Then I test my tap and im reminded im a color challenged idiot.”
