Shimano SLX

Based on 101 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
The Shimano SLX has a well-earned reputation as the best-value workhorse baitcaster around $100, with owners praising how smooth it is, how far it casts, and how easy it is to learn on as a first baitcaster. The main gripe is that the magnetic brakes are internal, so you have to pop off the side plate to adjust them, and a few anglers feel the braking is dated unless you step up to the pricier DC version. It's an ideal pick for beginners and budget-minded anglers who want a reliable, no-fuss reel that holds up for years.

77% of 101 verified owners recommend the Shimano SLX.

I purchased an SLX 150, and the casting distance was subpar. The overall control and stability of the brakes and spool tensioner felt inconsistent and unreliable.

Shimano SLX has treated me VERY nicely as a first baitcasting reel

I honestly don't notice any difference between it and my Shimano SLX.

I picked up a Shimano SLX and put it on a Shimano convergence rod. I spooled it with Yo-zuri hybrid 12lb. First time out over memorial day I thought I knew good technique to work on but backlash was a bitch.

I have a 6’6” cabelas tourney paired with a shimano slx and 30 lb PowerPro braid to a steel wire. If youre worried about your rod snapping, it wont. And unless you hook up a state record, youre not going to be spooled.

Compared to the shimano slx and ark gravity 3 I have, it’s blows them away. The mag braking is wonderful

I do have one Shimano SLX - and it’s my least favorite. Ordered two - one was broken first trip out.

I have a Shimano SLX and a 13 Fishing Concept C as well as several Abu reels, personallyi irefer my Abus over the others. For baitcasters really anything over the $100 price point will typically be a quality reel.

Get a Shimano slx and your pain will go away and also you will get the accuracy of a bait caster. I had a lews carbon fire and after getting the Shimano I never looked back.

I like it way more then my $99 shimano slx.

The shimano slx is tanky, but its biggest weakness is the brakes are very outdated imo unless you spend the extra for the dc model.

Last year I paired a Shimano SLX with a St Croix Bass X 7 ft rod. Absolutely love it. I was new to baitcasting and that reel was super easy to learn on, haven't had any ridiculous bird nests.

Shimano SLX line of baitcatsers is fantastic. My gf who does not fish was able to pick it up and use it for the day easily I just had to turn all the brakes on and tighten up the spool tension.

Shimano SLX HG. Just have three brakes on three off. Adjust cast control knob as needed. You just have to practice.

The shimano slx is akward to reel for me.

Like a shimano slx or curado k . I have both. I also use the diawa tatula sv reels for pitching and flipping applications . Any of those are great bang for buck reels and will get good mileage off

I have 4 SLX dcs and they all have failed me at some point. The drag is suddenly reduce to a point where I can barely reel in my lure.

Shimano SLX XT. I have it set to 1 with no lateral movement from my spool. I use my thumb to do all my work for me.

Shimano SLX is more refined than Fuego, but i'd probably bet on fuego more in saltwater scenario.

I sold my SLX XT because at the time it was all plastic and i didn't find it to be a particularly great caster.

Currently using a Shimano SLX, and last season a Daiwa Tatula 100H - both excellent for my usual small worms or creature baits w/ 1/8 or 3/16 bullet weights.

Also bought The Tatula 100 baitcast Reel and haven’t really touched my Shimano slx since .

my cassette would disengage mid-ride

I currently run 3 slx and one slx dc. I absolutely love these reels. Very compact but still have a lot of room for line and they hold up extremely well.
