Le Creuset Signature 5.5-Quart Dutch Oven

Based on 10 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
Owners overwhelmingly love the Le Creuset Signature 5.5-quart Dutch oven as a versatile, beautifully made everyday workhorse that many believe is worth its high price and will last for decades. The main complaints are real but uneven: the light interior tends to stain and show wear over time, a few report enamel dulling or pitting, and the low-temp plastic knob frustrates people who expect more from premium cookware. It's a genuinely great pot, but it's pricey and needs gentle care to stay looking its best.

My 5.5 qt pot was frequently used on a weekly basis. It developed a brown stain that didn’t come off after regular washing. After some time, it developed a porous surface that stuck to food.

my 5.5 is on the border of being too small. and i only really cook for my wife and i. but if i am going to go to all the effort of a braised dish, i like to make a lot.

I have a Le Creuset Signature 5.5 quart - it's 5.5" tall x 10 1/2" diameter (\~ 14 cm x \~26.5 cm). I use it all the time - soups, stir fries, boiling pasta water, roasting in the oven, and now baking bread, it is without a doubt my most-used piece.

I have had a red 5.5 qt. Dutch oven that was on my stove for years, and I used it all the time. I accidentally burnt something, and washed it with dish soap, water, and used a plastic scrubber. The enamel dulled and pitted.

My favorites are the 5.5 quart round Dutch oven and [this braiser]( http://www.williams-sonoma.com/m/products/le-creuset-signature-braiser/?pkey=e%7Cle%2Bcreuset%7C125%7CpriceAsc%7C0%7C8%7C15%7C%7C11&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH). They literally stay out on my stove all the time because they're my everyday go to.

The knob is rated up to 375, but most can handle high heat up to 500 without problems. You do run the risk of the knob cracking and falling apart. I have never needed to use mine over 400 so I don't really worry about it.

The price is fantastic, and Rhone won't be available much longer. A 5.5qt is super versatile. Replace the old one and enjoy!

Seems really shortsighted of them to sell their expensive 'buy it for life' cookware with the cheap, low temp rated knobs though.

Watch that plastic knob in the oven at higher temps, though. It's the only downside of the newer Le Creuset.

Le Creuset is UNEQUIVOCALLY the highest quality option. Like, it’s not even fucking CLOSE. Adding $200+ for a bad Wicked molding is obviously stupid though lol. But Le Creuset is worth the price and way, way, WAY more. Your fuckin grandkids will use it in their 80s.

The two classic ways to instantly and permanently ruin one are to use metal utensils (very easily done in a moment of absent-mindedness, especially if you use metal utensils commonly in the rest of your kitchen pots) or to thermally shock it (again, it only takes one incident of accidentally heating or cooling the thing a bit too fast...)

I really have missed cooking with the 5.5. It just seems to suit so many of my recipes.
