Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone System

Based on 49 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
The Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone is an affordable, beginner-friendly kit whose angle guides help newcomers hold a bevel, and patient owners get shave-sharp results that can last for years and rescue badly damaged edges. But it's a mixed bag: many call the clamp squishy and loose, the setup slow and finicky, and matching the angle tough on a lot of knives. Several hit harder problems too, including brackets that bend or snap, stones striking the clamp on small blades, and weak performance on super steels.

45% of 49 verified owners recommend the Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone System.

I've always used the Lanksy kits and absolutely love them.

I personally use a Lanksy deluxe with an added course diamond stone and a lansky turn box

I wanted to like the Lansky, I really did. But the clamp system is a pain in the ass, it takes too long to put it together and doesn't work very well or consistent on many knives.

My first sharpener geared toward pocket knives was the lansky deluxe 5 stone. I didn’t know much a about angles and the guide holes were a big help when I got started

the Lansky Deluxe is a pretty nifty sharpener. I like to take the hones and just hold them in my hands without the guides or clamp when I sharpen though.

The Lansky is a guided by-hand system, and the only one I've personally used. It's *fine* but I don't feel like I've ever gotten it down the way it's supposed to work. Namely, matching the angle is REALLY tough and flat out won't work on a lot of knives.

I find I can get a sharper edge then any other technique I've tried, but it is a slow process.

This is what I normally use for a sharpener. It's easy and makes knives sharp enough to shave.

several of the ones I listed (including the lansky) have a nasty habit of leaving scratches on the blades.

I tried a Lansky Deluxe Sharpener with the diamond stones, and it wasn't very effective.

Oh I’ve already got a Lansky Deluxe set for most of my knives and a King stone for others.

I've used mine for years for both hunting & kitchen knives.

I use the lanksy 5stone, got it literally 2 days ago, havent put it down. It's got a learning curve that youll figure out after your first knive. just make sure to read the instructions and youll be golden

I owned a Lansky deluxe for over 2 years with most of the accessories. I had the leather strop, ceramic hones, all the diamond grits etc. Although it can definitely put good edge on a knife, the clamp and the rods frustrated me. The rods are never straight and need constant bending and straightening if you dismantle the system often. Because of this I was l

The first sharpener I got was a [Natural Stones Lansky](https://www.amazon.com/Lansky-Deluxe-5-Stone-Sharpening-System/dp/B000B8IEA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487799556&sr=8-1&keywords=lansky) system which was fine. It doesn't require much skill and it got my knives sharp enough to shave hairs off.

A bracket clamps to the knife and holds a rod (attached to the stone) at essentially a constant angle to the blade. It has some issues so I don't use it on the knives I really care about but it's good for really quickly bringing a beat knife back to a decently usable edge. I use my Lansky set on kitchen knives.

Lansky deluxe sharpening system. I always thought the ~$5 knife sharpeners were good enough but wow is there a difference with this thing. Works way better than anything else I've used and well worth the 40 dollars

BladeForums▼ don’t recommend

At the 17 degree angle, the stone hits both the clamp and the plastic retaining screw. And to add to insult, the top of the plastic box they provide will not lock to stay closed.

You can shave with the knives. And once you get the bevel set to whatever angle you like, re-sharpening takes about 3 minutes.

The rubber is squishy per say and doesn't let the knife tighten down. The outer head of clamp is fat and hits the stone before my small knives blade does.

It is difficult to keep the same consistent angle for a knife that needs to be sharpened repeatedly. The marked angles (17, 20, 25, etc.) are really for reference.

It's a nice starter kit for those who'd like to go the whetstone way, though you will need to be extra alert and careful while using it.

Sharpening narrow blades in a clamped jig is going to require the use of angles far larger than you want.

I started out with stones, but found that the guides on the Lansky setup make it much easier to set correct angles.
