Milwaukee M18 FUEL Surge Impact Driver

Based on 89 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
Owners overwhelmingly love the Surge for how quiet and smooth it is compared to a standard impact, with the hydraulic drive giving excellent control and low vibration for driving screws on trim, cabinet, and everyday work. The trade-off is less peak torque, so it can struggle with heavy structural fasteners and large lags where a standard FUEL impact is the better choice. A handful of owners also ran into reliability problems like gearbox failures or oil leaks.

The gen 3 was significantly more powerful, and you can absolutely interpolate that result to the M12.

you need an impact driver that accepts the 1/4 hex bits. You’ll be able to adapt it for sockets as well. I recommend the Milwaukee Fuel Surge.

The SURGE hydraulic impact is amazing for hardware larger than #10. For #6 and #8 hardware, especially stainless or chinesium, it can snap the screw head off almost immediately even on the low setting.

Your M18 surge is 450inlbs compared to the 2953's 2000inlbs of torque

Milwaukee M18 Fuel Surge you have my heart

I also just had a surge impact driver leak oil everywhere while still brand new in box

The Surge is an immensely mediocre Impact Driver that is barely worth keeping (if you get it cheap) as a backup bench warmer or tool to loan out, IMO.

I’ve got both of the Milwaukee Surge impacts (hydraulic) because they’re quieter, but the DeWalt DCF870 is their brand new hydraulic impact and it’s easily twice as powerful as the M18 Surge.

I far prefer using an 18v oil impulse driver. They're not that much more expensive, but are much quieter and pleasant to use. [I use the Milwaukee 18v Surge oil impulse driver.]

I would not buy the Surge unless you need a quieter impact driver. Even then, a drill in my opinion is a better option because the Surge is very weak

The surge is great for sound control and vibrations, so if those are important to you it’s a great tool. But if you over work it you are going to damage the gearbox

The Milwaukee Surge is the best I have ever used of any brand, and is actually one of the best tools I have ever used of any category. Period.

I've got both the M12 and M18 versions of the Surge and use them both far more than my M18 impact. I like the reduction in noise.

I have the M18 surge impact driver but I find myself reaching for my Bosch 12v impact because it's just so much more compact

If power is what youre issue is here, than dont get the surge. It severely lacks in power compared to any normal milwaukee fuel impact driver.

their M18 Fuel Surge model is so much quieter than Dewalt impact driver.

With the exception of the Surge Impact driver. Its quiet, but a hunk of junk. It failed after two relatively easy projects for me.

SURGE runs quieter than the earlier models but I dont think it’s such a big improvement as to warrant the extra $100 or so

The Milwaukee surge has a weaker peak impact force than the standard impact driver, but it’s got a much longer impact duration so for driving fasteners like long structural screws or lags, they’re much faster. They’re definitely not as good at breaking fasteners free when stuck though.

I have a couple of Fuel Surge M18 impact drivers at work that an authorized Milwaukee repair man failed to fix on two attempts

My Milwaukee surge was pretty good for them too

I do prefer the M18 surge as it's so quiet

The Garage Journal— neutral

It spreads the torque out over a much larger angular range making it drive screws in a smoother and more controllable fashion but the cost there is that the impulse is vastly reduced.

the M18 Surge wasn't though, returned that and got the Dewalt hydraulic 1/4" impact and it is much better.
