Fluval FX6

Based on 281 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
Owners overwhelmingly love the FX6 for keeping water crystal clear with huge media capacity, strong flow, and surprisingly quiet operation, and most only clean it every few months. The recurring gripes are the steep price (people repeatedly point to SunSun canisters at a fraction of the cost), its sheer size needing a tall cabinet or floor space beside the tank, and that it must sit below water level or it gets finicky to prime, sometimes gurgling or rattling air after a cleaning. A handful of owners also reported leaks, hose pops, or motor and valve failures over the years.

81% of 281 verified owners recommend the Fluval FX6.

Better yet, don't buy a Fluval FX6 ever. SUMPS!

I currently have Fluval FX6 rated for 400 gallons for a 90 gallon tank.

It's running a fluval FX6 right now and there's an overflow which is randomly stuffed with various filter media.

Mine was in a 100gal tank and I had this monster pump/filter in it](https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Canister-Filter-FX6-400/dp/B00BJQ50HC) which was so good I onlu needed to clean the whole thing once every few months vs every few weeks.

People suggest the Fluval FX6 but I’m not a big fan of Fluval in general, I’ve had bad experiences with them. I would suggest the Pen Plex 1500

The Fluval FX6 is about 360 usd. I don’t know If I really needed that big of a unit. I think the smaller FX4 would have been adequate but I am a go big or go home guy. As far as quite, the fx4 and 6 purge air at 12 hour intervals. It’s a bubble blow that will get your attention but other then that it seems pretty quite, once the air has been evacuated.

I even bought a fluval fx6 canister filter thinking I needed more powerful filtration. That did not work either so I took it back. It actually was the worst filter I ever used!

My ideal filter (excluding sumps) would be a combination of the flow rate and tank drain/automatic priming of the Fluval FX6 and the layout and pre-filter of the Eheim Pro 4.

with a solid filter - I’ve got the Fluval FX6 - I only have to do water changes about twice a month.

I have an fx6 and my experience has not been the best. After about 2 months of owning it, it stopped working.

I've had mine for several years and it's perfectly reliable and extremely easy to clean.

she’s in a 125 gal with a fluval fx6 rated for 500 gal so only need to water change once a month

For my 55 gallon turtle tank I use a fluval fx6 but it's really expensive. I suggest a sunsun.

Fluval FX6 is my go to recommendation for a turtle tank in the 125+ gallon range. Plenty of media space and enough real flow rate to turn over a 150 gallon tank \~4 times an hour.

Even my Fluval FX6 on the floor next to my tank needs help getting started and settling in.

My fluval fx6 valvues both failed on the same day after 4 years really weird coincidence

Fluval FX6 is the bomb digity my man.

once you throw in a ton of rockwork I think you're going run into limitations on the plumbing of the FX6 and you're going to find you've got a lot more deadspots than you think. A single intake and single exhaust (even with the split nozzle) is going to be a big limitation.

We have a 125g and a fluval fx6. I thought i could push 3 months before cleaning. Nope. Month and a half at best plus partial water changes.

I feel the fluval fx6 is overrated and too pricey.

I use a Fluval Fx6 canister filter! Keeps this tank clear as crystal 👍

SunSun canister filters, got my 525 GPH canister for like, $90, while the Fluval FX6 is almost $400 in most places. You're not paying for better materials, you're just paying for a name.

I have a fluval fx6 on a 75gal. With filtration overkill is better

The FX6 is a well made Canister filter with faves about the clamp screw down and vulvae to hose connections. The down side to the FX6 is in the Cheap Sponge round center inserts and the cheap tall half circle Foam filter inserts.
