Eheim Classic 2217

Based on 26 comments across 3 communities
TL;DR
Owners treat the Eheim Classic 2217 as a buy-it-once filter: it runs nearly silent, lasts for years to decades, and is dead simple with no fragile electronics or fussy features. Maintenance is praised too, since you can backwash the gunk straight into a bucket without opening it often. The most common gripes are that the media sits loose in the canister instead of in lift-out baskets (annoying at cleaning time), and that flow can leave dead spots, so some owners add a powerhead.

88% of 26 verified owners recommend the Eheim Classic 2217.

AquariaCentral — Eheim 2217 - Difficult to start after water change▼ don’t recommend

It used to start up fine when I plugged it back in after re-filling the tank, but now I have to pick it up and shake it vigorously to get it to start.

If I had to choose again I'd probably buy two Eheim. Though the Fluval is a bit easier to maintain and it does suck up fish waste better, the noisy impeller and crappy build quality of it has kind of turned me off it.

MonsterFishKeepers — Eheim 2217 problem▼ don’t recommend

couldn't get it to pump the water through unless I lowered the outlet hose

I would recommend getting the eheim classic 2217 the flow is adjustable with ball valves so no worries with too much flow + spraybar and there are so many different media combinations so u can add what u need and remove what u don't.. Always starts easy to remove and clean..

AquariaCentral — Eheim 2217 making humming noise▼ don’t recommend

this ultra quite pump had developed a moderate humming noise

Never had a tank this easy to maintain before. Over-filtration is gud.

I have one with my classic 2217 and it's basically the exact same canister but without the motor and it goes in front of the motored version, connected with hose of course.

You might also consider the Eheim Classic 2217. The filter media doesn't come in easy to lift baskets, so a little annoying for maintenance. Otherwise, its a great filter.

I just bought the 2217 model for my 75 gallon for about 130$ off Big Als Online.

For me, nothing beats eheim when it comes to biological filtration. But, I do have to supplement the tank with power heads when it comes to flow. 75 gallon eheim classic 2217.

I’ve had the Eheim Classic 2217 running for years with zero issues. It's simple, reliable, and works great without all the complicated features that other brands have.

I love my eheim 2217 but after doing a heap of research before getting a canister it was clear to me that fluvals are just as good and probably easier to clean.

i love my eheim classic 2217. that and a powerhead to kill dead spots and you shouldnt have any problems in a 75. they run silent and purportedly last forever.

I recommend an eheim 600/2217 canister filter. They’ll last decades and have zero media bypass because the water goes in the bottom and out the top.

I had a very successful planted 120g years ago in which I used a pair of Eheim Classic 2217's along with an Aquaclear 70 HoB for surface agitation

I have an Eheim classic 2217. All I do for maintenance is backwash it every few weeks to flush the gunk out into a bucket. I actually haven't even opened it in the 3+ months I've been running it since backwashing is so effective with it.

I upgraded my canister filter from 2 eheim classic 2215's to a 2217. best filter there is.

I have a 2217, and I absolutely love it. It's never jammed or clogged. I've never seen it reduce flow in a noticeable way at all.

AquariaCentral — Priming EHEIM 2217 - Kindly help me▲ recommend

I have the Eheim 2217 also. I followed the instructions in the owners manual & it works perfect every time.

MonsterFishKeepers — Noisy Eheim 2217's▲ recommend

I have a 2217 and a 2215 and it's hard to tell they are running unless I stick my ear right up to them.

I use the 2217(600) on my 36g, definitely wouldn't want smaller on a larger tank.

MonsterFishKeepers — Eheim 2217▲ recommend

I think that it is a fantastic filter and works awesome for 55 - 75 gallon tanks

AquariaCentral — Product Review: Eheim 2217 Classic Series Canister Filter▲ recommend

The filter so far is dead silent, I have the canister in an open stand

light.fish blog — Eheim 2215 vs 2217▲ recommend

It's built to last and will turn over more water than the Eheim 2215.
