Had 1 ugly stick break over the years. Locked in a rod hold and line got snagged by a chunk of tree debris.

the second section from the top snapped in half 😢. I was completely in shock.

IT will not snap it will handle anything you can catch

I started with the terrible but indestructible Ugly Stik GX2 and still have it as the rod I give to guests or kids even though the reel is long gone to the gods of rust and salt.

Yeah they miss bites but my wallet doesn’t miss buying em new rods haha

I can take my ugly stik gx2 ul, close it in a car door, a car window, step on the tip and then put it in a ceiling fan blade at max speed and it wont break.

Not great at anything but GOOD at everything.

I use only Gx2’s for fishing. Affordable, easy to source, often on sale and get the job done every time.

    YouTube▼ don’t recommend

The reel is ok but just that. Its nothing special by any means so i got myself a Daiwa Crossfire Lt that i will be replacing it with.

since it’s a moderate fast action I just use that one pretty much to throw rattle traps now; but I did have to upgrade the reel. I’ve had it for 6 years now.

    That AK47 of fishing rods

I also have a few ugly stik GX2's and they're pretty inexpensive, durable and very whippy. If you manage to break one it doesn't ruin your day

    Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Ugly Stik GX2 rods are fiberglass composite rods. They are overbuilt for durability but that means they sacrifice on finesse. They have a very whippy moderate to slow action which makes it hard to load the rods with small lures.

The old Ugly Stik tiger I own is over 25 years old and I landed my pb flathead catfish on it at 58lbs. Great video!

they have always pulled the big fish for me in the Gulf of Mexico!

    YouTube▼ don’t recommend

I had some casting GX2s when they first came out and the spines were all on the wrong side of the rod.

Mine broke above real with 2oz weight and a small piece of perch on the cast. Brought it back to Walmart got a new one and I really like it!

I feel like ugly stick is a good brand for ready available gear but if you really want quality and longevity hellcats are the future

    YouTube▲ recommend

I have used Shakespere rods since the 1950s never any problem.😊 That travel rod is a must have soon for me.

    YouTube▼ don’t recommend

Yes they need better guides. In about three seasons braided line will cut the UGLY Stik guides.

    Reddit— neutral

It's a nice 2-piece rod for the money, they have a reputation for being virtually indestructible. However playing smaller fish isn't really as fun since the blank is pretty thick and stiff especially if you plan on using it for largemouth bass

    Reddit▼ don’t recommend

If you are willing to take lower durability, a bunch of different rod companies can sell you a 100% graphite rod that is lighter, more sensitive, and have better hardware

    YouTube▲ recommend

    Great rods, we like them!

the Ugly Stik GX2 has a solid tip, thing is slow AF

i think the natural progression of owning an Ugly Stik is replacing/upgrading the reel with a Sienna

    Redditⓘ good to know

this rod in general feels heavier than ones I’ve used before.
