In owners' own words

I used a Cs3 on my board for like 6 months and really wanted to like it but to me it's a piece of junk for the same reasons you said. Noise everywhere if you surpass the middle of the knobs.

The Boss Compressor Sustainer has always been kind of mid at best. I'll take it over most optical compressors, but I've always thought it was a bit of a tone sucker.
livinthereals on Reddit
I got rid of it as soon as I could. Massive tone suck and if I remember right, kind of noisy. Of the current crop of Boss pedals I think this is near the bottom.

So the cs-3 is a classic and for good reason, however I feel these days there must be a blend control on a compressor for it to be a viable option so I sold mine
ZombieMozart on Reddit
I got my buddy this Boss Compressor as a gift. God we both hated that pedal so much… just couldn’t get it to do “the thing” that I liked about my compressors.
shake__appeal on Reddit
I used to have a Boss CS-3 and did not like it much because it made my playing feel sterilized, while killing my tone at the same time.
yazdonder on Reddit
Yeah, it took me quite a while to figure out that the CS3 simply kills a whole lot of low end signal. For some time I thought something was broken or I was going insane. Immediately replaced the CS3 with the Boss Limiter Enhancer LMB3.
Sigggi24 on Reddit
They make excellent pedals but the CS-3 is definitely not one of them. Very noisy compared to similarly priced rivals
gambisk on Reddit
My CS-3 sounds terrible with a power cable—I can only use it with a battery, which is why it sits on a shelf.
childish-arduino on Reddit
I’ve had one of these for years and every time I read a big thread like this about it I get it out again and stick it on the board before spending some time tweaking the knobs. Every single time I’ve tried it has sounded bad and strangles the sound of my playing.
EdgarAetheling on Reddit
It works great on guitar but eats whole low end from your bass. Do not recommend at all

CS-3 is easily my least favorite out of any I own. Agree that it's a fine sustainer.

Setup quirks & things to watch for

Not complaints — practical notes from owners that didn't affect the score.

I use mine as a boost before the gain section of my board. The attack control is usually very high too, so the individual notes are heard even under heavy gating distortion.
Malakai0013 on Reddit
I’d highly suggest trying this particular compressor after your gain pedals, possibly even in the effects loop of your amp (if you use an amp with a high-gain channel).
lumberjake18 on Reddit
Pretty close to the settings I use! Depending on which guitar I'm using I might have the level set differently, and I keep the sustain closer to around 2/3 o'clock
sa007ak on Reddit
Compressors are weird, takes some time to figure them out. Try placing it in different parts of the signal chain, and using a fairly small amount of “sustain”.
sunplaysbass on Reddit
Balance out finger style playing and thicken out single coil clean playing mainly (especially with slightly thinner string gauges).
Spooky-Toast_1 on Reddit
Just put them on a daisy chain with a modern pedal and they’ll get the full 9v, it’s a well known hack for these old Boss pedals.
belbivfreeordie on Reddit
Its not necessarily noisy - the sustain knob just offers more range of compression than anyone really needs - resulting in it often being dialed too high and compressing the shit out of the noise floor of whatever is being ran through it.
balunite on Reddit
Fast attack, slow release, level at 12 and tone to taste if you want it always on
