Who it's for
A great fit if
  • Nano and small reef tanks from 10 to 40 gallons
  • Keepers growing zoas, LPS and softies at moderate PAR
  • Mixed-reef owners running two or more units per tank
  • Hobbyists happy to dial in their own light settings
Look elsewhere if
  • Large tanks where four to six units get pricey versus alternatives
  • Owners wanting to adjust settings away from the tank
  • Anyone bothered by very white stock schedules that grow algae

Love my two primes, only gripe is that they’re noisy, not loud, but the fans are noticeable

"Affordable"

If it came with a mounting arm, I'd say worth $200.

I had better growth with my old viparspectra 165w light than I do with my 2 new AI prime 16hd hands down.. but yes the colours look better with AI prime

Love my prime’s, got 3 of them and they have grown some monster acro colony’s and some amazing clams.

how horrible they are

Those EBAs look gorgeous with those lights!

Love my Prime HD, i added a 16 HD when I upgraded and the colour is no where near as nice as the HD side of the tank

YouTube▼ don’t recommend

It's sad watching these older videos and seeing how much these companies continue to raise prices.

YouTube▲ recommend

Yeah nice lights if you're rich......

Reddit— neutral

Yeah I run a 16HD , it’s okay , the torches and Kenya tree grow quickly but anything on the sandbed is a bit slow

YouTube▼ don’t recommend

My problem with AI and Kessel's lights are the high cost your average user cant afford a 300 to 500 dollar lights.

YouTube▼ don’t recommend

this light is not what i would call affordable imo.

I'm running an ai prime 16HD on a 20gal with a green bta on it, seems to be doing ok.

did not know about the pinch, that makes it so much easier

I’ve had great growth from mine over a Waterbox 20.

I have a pair of AI 16HD on my 12 long and I have to agree the shimmer is better with the kessils tank, I do really like the sunrise/sunset effect and moonlight on the AIs so it’s a trade off imo.

YouTube▼ don’t recommend

When I heard the price I quit looking at it!

I can't see this being better than Chihiros. IF I was setting up a reef tank, I would def spend the cash for AI Prime lights.

YouTube▼ don’t recommend

Bruh, that price point is insane!!

YouTube▲ recommend

It looks incredibly cool.

Love my prime 16hd!

I think the biggest issue with the primes is shadowing. Having LED’s in a small circle just doesn’t cut it for sps. With that being said, I think you can achieve a lot with ai primes. I am happy with mine! 2 Ai Prime 16HD’s over a 40 gal Recife.

They’re so incredibly expensive

Common problems & things to know

Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.

Redditⓘ good to know

I have two prime 16hd over a 17 gallon and 30% is the max before my torch start retracting. You might need like 20-25% The good news is they are quiet and last longer at such a low output.

Redditⓘ good to know

I run an AI Prime 16hd and can never get it right.

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

Ive used the saxby schedule on my tank recently, i have 4 primes over a 4ft reef. The schedule is very white, it looks good but algae grows like a beast under that schedule in my experience

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

Mixed reef minimum 4, better 6. At that point two 4 foot ReefBreeders would be cheaper and give you less shadowing( more coverage).

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

Saxby settings at peak (as downloaded from AI) actually weren't very high in my tank (100-160 PAR in most of the tank). *I assume it's because same percentage intensity on AI Prime is lower output than same percentage on his stronger lights.

The Planted Tank Forumⓘ good to know

For sheer power.. A360we hands down. At full power the ai prime seems almost insufficient for this tank

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

I don’t have any diffusers on mine and I notice dark areas around the corners of the tank

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

I did lower to first 4 100% and the rest 50% to reduce the melting of the lens.

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

I've seen people say that the high UV setting can cause the front lens to melt

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

When I set up the recommended settings my fans kicked on a lot more.

Reef2Reefⓘ good to know

I tried their light settings but it was way too bright and white.
