In owners' own words

my Denon X3800H did. I mean hot as in relative. It's not like it burns. But it was definitely hotter than what I'd like electronics to be at.

One issue the 3800 has that drives me crazy is when watching Directv stream through Apple TV it clicks loud when the audio formats changes like from show to commercial.

This firmly establishes, in my mind, that the X3800 is simply not up to the task of powering 5 speaker (down from 7) surround sound when the speakers consist of the polk R700s in front and Klipsh R26F A's as rears.
it shows audio format "unknown" and no input channels. With bluetooth it detects PCM but again no input channels and there's no sound.

I've had two Denon's die on me and literally no other brand. So I would absolutely not buy that one.

for "normal" sound like 30%, it's okay but for "heavy" sound, like 70%+ it will heat too much

Sometimes when we are watching a movie or streaming content or listening to music the X3800 shuts down. The receiver is sitting on the top of my equipment stand and and gets plenty of ventilation. When this happens I touch the X3800 and it is slightly warm or cool.
I've just had to send back a X3800H because it fried it's self after about 50 hours use

It does run hot. You will need some sort of ventilation or cooling solution up top.

I went 3800 to 4800 and to me the 4800 sounds much better especially with music

My 3800 is coming back from repair. I believe my kef r6 meta made it tap out.

Worth noting, this is my second X3800H. The first one i bought on ebay and i had similar problems with PS5/Shield/Nintendo Switch etc and i guess you could call it handshake issues. Sometimes i would try to turn on the PS5 and the screen would just go black and couldnt get any picture.

Setup quirks & things to watch for

Not complaints — practical notes from owners that didn't affect the score.

I have now a x3800h and upmixing is absolutely unnecessary. Setting the AVR in auto mode is enough.

Just arrived today. Really excited to hook this up to my Klipsch Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 from deep clearance at Costco and testing on PS5 now that it supports Atmos!

I too have had shutdown issues with a Dennon x3800h; It occurred to me, last night, that since I was trying to use it to power an 11 speaker surround system (using 2 power hungry Polk r700s, in front) that I might be abusing the power supply excessively...
Denon is a good brand, you just got a seemingly bad one.

I had problems with my Denon X3800H when I first got it (coming from a Denon x1500H). The impact and bass sounded crap, and I configured things through REW afterwards. It turns out my calibration mic was semi-faulty - I recently swapped it for a new one and all the impact and bass is back, and sounds great.

I have it on Ethernet (wired) and haven't had any issue. I've received firmware updates (eg. Dirac capability). The only issue I've with this Denon is with its BT connection to my Bose noise-cancelling earbuds. Either turning off BT transmission and on again, or unplugging power from Denon for 5 seconds fixes it.

it gets warm between the Denon and the shelf

Not until last week with my 3800 at least
