In owners' own words

after just a week I was fed up with the Opus (1 minute grind time for 18g, inconsistent retention requiring beatings, drifting grind setting, messy etc.)

200 dollars was my budget, purchased the Opus...and got a 200 dollar disappointment. Grind consistency is terrible, static is terrible, retention is terrible compared to the cheap ass Bodum.

I've come to the decision that I'm really not happy with my Fellow Opus, it does a good job, but the retention is a pain in the ass, and the anti-static stuff is awful, there are fines stuck to everything.

I bought a Fellow Opus, at the time it was the darling of this sub but the retention issues became apparent not long after using it. It's tough. I have a DF54 now

I have also had a Baratza Encore, a Baratza Virtuoso, and a Fellow Opus, all of which broke because plastic parts snapped.
durqandat on Reddit
Just sent back the Fellow Opus grinder because it was terrible with retention. I had to bang on it so hard it felt like I was being abusive!

It’s a very overpriced, plastic grinder with so much retention, even with weekly cleanings. I won’t even start on how much of a pain the internal adjustment ring is and how cumbersome of a process it is to dial in new beans.
TheLastRealRedditor on Reddit
I replaced my fellow opus (still in return window) with teh J-Ultra manual grinder. Same price, worlds better actual grinding capabilities.
kirbydabear on Reddit
I do have a Fellow Opus that I use for pour over/cold brew but not a fan of the mess or retention so I think I’m about ready to quit on it.
Ktejada31 on Reddit
My Fellow Opus grinder and this espresso machine just cannot do consistent pulls and if it happens I just chalk it up to chance.
djoliverm on Reddit
Fellow opus, visually appealing design, but dialing in espresso with opus is unnecessarily difficult. You have take off lid to access micro adjustments. Very inconvenient

I had the fellow opus and couldn’t stand it. Too messy, inconsistent and would gets lots of retention.

Setup quirks & things to watch for

Not complaints — practical notes from owners that didn't affect the score.

On my Fellow Opus some beans required 2.5, some 3.0, some even coarser.
soopahfingerzz on Reddit
Static wasn't a problem when new, but eventually enough gunk gets caught up in the exit opening and clogs the anti-static pins.
ShowMeYorPitties on Reddit
I have a fellow opus and an ode gen 2. I use both but started out with the Opus.
Top_Mark_2462 on Reddit
I've been experimenting with slow feeding and it does seem to improve the grind
srkram on Reddit
Yeah I know the retention is a thing. Spraying has helped with that for me.
