Edition XS

TL;DR
Most owners rate the Edition XS as a standout for the money, praising its wide soundstage and detail, and many prefer it to Sennheiser models they also own. It takes EQ well, and plenty of owners use EQ to shape the sound to taste. The complaints are consistent: a headband and loose clamp that many owners fix with an aftermarket strap, reports of failing drivers and other build problems, and treble that some find too bright or tiring over long sessions.

68% of 123 verified owners recommend the Edition XS, based on real owner verdicts aggregated from Reddit, enthusiast forums, and YouTube.

What owners like
  • Wide soundstage and strong detail
  • Strong value, especially at sale or refurbished prices
  • Responds well to EQ
  • Many owners prefer it to Sennheiser HD560S, HD600, HD650, and HD6XX headphones they also own
  • Large, open earcups that many owners find comfortable
What owners flag
  • Headband and weak clamp make the fit loose for many, and owners often add an aftermarket strap
  • Build quality worries, with reports of drivers failing, crackling, and warranty replacements
  • Treble that some owners find too bright, shrill, or fatiguing

A great fit if
  • Listeners moving up from a Sennheiser HD560S or HD600-series who want a wider soundstage
  • Buyers comfortable using EQ to tune the sound
  • Gamers who want a wide, detailed presentation
  • Owners with larger heads
Look elsewhere if
  • Treble-sensitive listeners or anyone wanting a laid-back sound for long sessions
  • Smaller heads, which some owners say the loose fit does not suit
  • Bass lovers after heavy slam, especially without EQ
  • Buyers who would rather not risk a warranty return or add a strap

The lack of clamp I can definitely understand, I can’t even lay my head back with these without worrying they’ll fall off. The quality from what I could tell was pretty good though?

I hate my edition xs so much because they're amazing, just don't work, they keep losing all audio on the right side and I'm not the only one with that issue

Decent headphones but......I'm on my third, 2 failed and were warranty replaced. Also the headband should be classed as a war crime. Other than that I highly recommend them.

You could have a faceoff with any headphone on Earth, regardless of cost and compare it to a $169 Edition XS, and while it would lose, it's MUCH closer than it should be...

i like it, been using mine for a few months. that being said I couldnt get the bass to rumble as good as the Deva Pro with the same Oratory EQ despite having the better bass spec.

It's still not incredibly comfortable with those, IMO. The huge cups and pads never feel like I'm wearing them correctly, so I'm always adjusting them.

They are great but not (at least for me) for long, laid back listening. They are too engaging for that. And despite I was appreciating sonic qualities of Edition XS, I've settled with Senns hh660s2.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

after a certain amount of listening time when you go back to your older headphones they all start to sound muddy and with less texture and resolution.

Reddit▲ recommend

Box was perfect, they didn't have a mark on them, and they sounded just perfect as well. I'll say what most others will mention, the headband does really suck. Aside from that, no concerns!

I would keep my senn hd550 over them any day of the week. I got the edition xs on special so I added them to the collection, now they gather dust.

its been 3 weeks using edition xs and its excellent pair of headphone ( coming from hd560s revised version ). These sound so good bass is very linear loved it and treble detailing is just perfect.

I too think that the XS are better sounding. Better soundstage, more engaging, more energetic, to my ears. But you know what, I probably will get fatigued listening to the Hifimans after a couple hours.

Reddit— neutral

Right now, they sound "clinical" and "flat," with hardly any "texture" in the bass and vocals. They have an impressive amount lot detail though.

Reddit▲ recommend

The Hifiman edition XS is everything I wanted in an upgrade and the Edition XS just hits with Bass and Treble and sounds as good as all the reviews said it would.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I couldn’t even get it to work with EQ. It’s such an inconsistent, non-cohesive tune that I just find myself riding the volume the whole time.

Reddit— neutral

My initial impressions are that bass and sub-bass is certainly better, hits harder and goes deeper than the HE400SE. Mids seem clearer and more localized. Treble seems noticeably sibilant in a way that I'm not fond of yet

Reddit▲ recommend

I like them better than the Sundaras I had. Good soundstage but with a bit of bass to make my bass head okay with these being my only expensive headphones.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

That alone cause some sort of pressure push that warped diaphragms and caused a weird catastrophic driver flex that destroyed both sides.

Reddit— neutral

Horrible build quality, comfortable for big heads, not my kind of sound stock, but it only needs a 4 or 5 EQ filters to sound good for me.

Reddit▲ recommend

now I am using XS with ka17 and it's certainly huge jump , Soundstage, Detail , imaging all supernice and even with superbusy track it doesn't get muddy

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I got a pair but don't like them much. I feels theres a noticeable lack of low end slam compared with dynamics or even other planars.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Personally I really hate the materials they've used though, even with a nice fit I rarely pick them out of my collection

Reddit— neutral

Suberb comfort and and very surrounding soundstage. If only the tuning was more my taste.... Too bright for me. Great headphone still!

Reddit▲ recommend

I bought the refurb XS's from Hifiman's website, they looked brand new when they arrived and have performed great for ~1 year now. Awesome deal too!

Common problems & things to know

Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.

Redditⓘ good to know

People who are interested in the XS... Just do one quick search about vibrating and dead drivers. Be aware of the reputation the XS has even in the Hifiman qc lottery.

Redditⓘ good to know

The Edition XS are a sneaky pair of headphones in terms of power reqs. Low impedance with sensitivity that rides the line between low/high sensitivity.

Redditⓘ good to know

People have different sound preferences, so there is no universal answer to this question. This model has a very strange fit on the head that may not suit everyone, and this can have a significant impact on the sound

Redditⓘ good to know

The edition xs has a bright sound signature while the hd560s has a flat sound signature so I’d say having sharper treble should be expected.

Redditⓘ good to know

According to ssl specs, the mk2 should drive the xs without issue. https://support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/21551651147677-SSL-2-2-MKII-Audio-Performance-Specifications-Compared-to-MKI But I don’t see max power specified anywhere.

Redditⓘ good to know

The Edition XS fits too loosely on many people's heads, so headbanging with it will cause it to fall off.

Redditⓘ good to know

I ultimately want to get a solid-state class A discrete amp, like the Schiit Audio Mjolnir 3. I gave the Edition XS to my son. His PC alone couldn’t drive it well, so I also provided him with my solid-state Schiit Audio Magni-3 amp, which drives the XS just fine.

Redditⓘ good to know

Coming from the HD 599, you’ll probably be partial something with a warmer sound signature like the HD 6XX instead of the HD 600. The Edition XS are neutral and airy, so you’re not gonna get that “richness” in tonality like you will with either Sennheiser 600 model.

According to specs you have 63mw for 16 Ohm so on the border for these( that will get you to ear damaging 115spl) , but I would bet some EQ will improve the sound , a bass shelf for starters and a lift on the mid range dip around 1500-2500 kHz. Many presets available online.

Redditⓘ good to know

As far as the bass response goes you could use Squigilink and just run a 20hz-150hz using a Harmon curve target for a parametric EQ. It will definitely increase the bass without bleeding into the mids or affecting anything else. Planar headphones take EQ in the bass region VERY well.

Redditⓘ good to know

Even, if you add a PEQ to boost your bass (which you should) you will need to decrease the pre-gain by a similar amount. So you now need power of ~200 mW and a voltage of 1.895 Vrms, which this can easily achieve. Before you get a new amplifier, I'd play with PEQ to see if that fixes your issue.

My brother in christ, the Edition XS are anything but efficient.
