“Both the ER2 and ER4 have excellent detail retrieval, and before the rise of chi-fi were really good bang for your buck for headphones with excellent detail retrieval.”
“I consider them to have a balanced neutral response. It has been my gold standard where I compare every other IEM to. Well worth the cost in 2026.”
“Man I got scammed like you when I bought these iems some years ago haha these things only work well if the recording of the songs is absolutely perfect”
“I wish I liked mine, they sound *incredibly* lifeless to me, and so they usually stay in their pouch.”
“Every penny, just first thing to do is to swap the oem cable with a balanced one and you'll be blown by the amount of bass and clarity.”
“I really love these, I just cant find myself using them daily, or weekly....or monthly.....or actually at all besides ONCE since I've purchased them.”
“They´re fine as long as you sleep on your back with the back of your head on your pillow. But they´re not great if you sleep on your side or back.”
“Not only do they have an excelling, easy-listening tuning but their design means more people will get to enjoy that tuning.”
“All of you that have been scared of these were right and I’m switching back to foam tips now.”
“I loved these headphones! Until they caused really bad impacted earwax issues in both ears.”
“the ER2 matches or beats Bose above 1kHz, they cost like 5x less, and don't run out of batteries half way through an international flight.”
“They are crazy in terms of bang for buck, if you are patient they oftern go on sale and you can get them cheaper again.”
“Those little frosted tips are the worst, they come off the earphone so easily.”
“Yes, they are amazing and among the best value IEMs ever. They're basically studio like flat and I love them to death”
“I’d love to keep using the etys but I got impacted earwax in one ear in 2017 very likely from using etys regularly for years.”
“There is actually bass now and it does sound quite good, but not as boomy as the se215 (which tbh I think I still do prefer).”
“it was enough to make me switch to Comply foam tips immediately.”
“The comfort, isolation, and sound presentation are what I've been searching for in headphones.”
“Another reason I just don't want to ever own any Etymotics.”
“I now can say that I completely enjoy ER2XR over its older siblings, at a cheaper price, too.”
“Tuning wise it’s still great, in fact still considered one of the more “accurate” tunings essential for stage/studio use.”
“if I want to hear anything at all, they need to be taken out, and taking them out and putting them in is a pain.”
“I always tell people that etymotic’s are for masochists”
“In terms of sound, the Ety's will have better resolution and instrument separation.”
Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.
“I've had the tips get stuck a few times myself, though I've always been able to get them out with some patience. Sucks that you ended up having to go to the ER to get them removed.”
“This already seems like the result of bad decisions, so why not make another! If I attempted this, I'd definitely break it, but I am hopeless. It's not like it's a $10 cable either!”
“Obviously the headroom is greater with the 5K. However phone still had plenty of headroom as well. I mean 116dB SPL/V@1kHz with Impedance of 18 ohm is not exactly 'hard to drive'.”
“In what terms 'better'? Just curious. Edit: Was not precise enough. ER2XR was tuned to the exact curve Etys were aiming for + the bass shelf. Edit2: What user age we are talking about?”
“This is the kind of info I was scrolling to find! How long are you able to wear the triple flange tips? I find with AirPods, for example, my ears hurt after an hour to an hour and half.”
“Yep, I think you're right. As I wrote in my other comment, switching to the foam tips made an enormous difference, so maybe I still need to figure out how to use the rubber tips properly.”
“They're not lacking there at all, there are just no treble peaks. Most IEMs have peakiness in that region which can cause the er2 to sound a little recessed in comparison.”
“Pro tip but probably not recommended is to save the cores from the foam tips, buy your own foam earplugs, cut a hole through the center and put in the core. Way cheaper than $25 for 5 pairs.”
“So this is what people mean by “you gotta push past that comfort point” with Etymotic’s. I got a pair but have not been able to insert them that far. Feels like I’m gonna pop something in there”
“They start to wear out after a time. That is why they have replacements. That said, have had them stuck, though was lucky I could still get them out on my own.”
“How do you get the fancy braided cable on this model? I have the regular straight cable with the microphone (would prefer a non-microphone cable honestly) Edit: Been a while since I used these, no microphone”
“Haha happened to me twice, although I was able to get something a little sharp to get into the 3rd round silicone and pull it out. Still not fun tho lmao”
“The issue for sleeping with these isn't strangling, it's that they stick out a lot so you can't turn your head on the side without poking your ear drum.”
“The Mays aren’t great at isolating either. They do ok if I get a really good fit. The Etymotics look great for that. I do like that the Mays have the DAC out of the box. What do you use as a DAC with your ER2XRs?”
“Nice review man...I'm expecting an ER2XR in the mail either tomorrow or Monday and after reading your review I'm even more excited to hear it.”
“nice one! i'm also bring my IEM with triple flange ear tips as my main ear tips, also i do bring my TWS with ANC capability, mostly i'm using TWS when i'm on the move or in transportation for avoiding tangle my wired IEM”
“I thought about that, however that seems like that's just going to add more length to it, and then it would stick out even further.”
“Desktop amplifiers geared to wide range of headphones can make multi-driver hybrid IEMs sound worse. Impedance matching is very important in this case, you'll need an amplifier with a near-zero OI (rule of eights says ≤2.25 Ohm).”
“I get the feeling that I produce unusual amount or consistency, I’ve had ongoing issues that other people just don’t seem to have!”
“You're probably better off getting a USB C adapter or DAC. The connectors on 3rd party cables always end up huge on etymotics.”
“They come with dual flange tips that feel and act like your standard earbud tip so you can just wear them without a tight seal”
“Same thing happened to me twice and I just used tweezers to pull it out the first time. Second time I didn’t have tweezers so I used the 3.5mm jack to dig it out. Took about ten seconds, can’t imagine going to the ER to have it removed.”
“How can you tell they're worn out based on the picture? I own these too and I'd rather not find myself in this situation.”
“I am irrationally worried about such form factor. How they manage to enclose so much elements in such a lean enclosure.”
