TL;DR
Most owners are happy with the Barista Pro as an all-in-one machine that goes from switched off to a good espresso or milk drink in a few minutes, and many call it an easy first machine. Plenty report years of daily use without trouble. The built-in grinder is the weak spot owners raise most, with complaints about inconsistent grinding, choking, and struggles with light roasts, and a number have added a separate grinder. A smaller group report breakdowns or shots that swing between good and bad for no clear reason.

Look elsewhere if
  • Light roast drinkers chasing high-clarity shots

I like my Barista Pro, I did buy a separate grinder if I want to dial in for espresso but usually leave the hopper full on the built in grinder and make my morning capacino.

I couldn’t get that machine with the internal grinder to give me good espresso at 5, it was 2-3 on the internal setting depending on oxidation levels of the coffee.

It is great. We went back to the local 3rd wave coffee shop and were shocked that it was much better. That said, the grinder broke after a few months and Breville didn’t fix it properly

Reddit— neutral

I usually have a good amount of retention right after a cleaning with mine until all the crevices are filled and then it’s usually pretty good within 0.1-0.2 grams

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

the steam wand would simply stop to steam after around a minute and I had to set the internal grinder to 1 out of 10 to get above 30 sec extraction time

Reddit▲ recommend

I find it to be a brilliant little machine with all the mod cons and it doesnt take much tinkering to make an espresso or flat white that’s on par with my local barista.

Reddit— neutral

the pro was not bad at all and its settings are nice, but I realized the steamer and the actual temperature stability on the legato is so much better

I'm happy with My BBP, like everyone said, the main issue is about the grinder which have quite a retention, but solvable using the bellow from Amazon, other than that it's a good entry level machine

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Our machine died and there was one in the new machines box. Was 18 months ago. Barista Pro. The steam/hot water dial snapped today.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Not worth. Got one as a gift, it does most things ok. Grinder is barely acceptable, espresso is ok, steam wand is weak.

I bought a barista pro 3 years ago to get started. I get specialty beans from a subscription and that was enough to beat any lattes served in the morning rush. Never felt the need to upgrade the machine.

Reddit— neutral

since I've replaced the internal grinder with external ones (first the Fellow Opus which I sold and am now waiting for the Baratza ESP Pro).

Reddit▲ recommend

My espressos taste good, much better than chain coffee shops and but not as good as independent shops that really care. It's a good machine for the money.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

The in built grinder is the culprit, I have changed to a hand grinder and the consistency improved significantly

Reddit— neutral

couldn't figure out the way to get a decent shot. Plus, the group head seems so tight, it's extremely hard to take the portafilter out.

Reddit— neutral

It has better steam than the Gaggia, some temp control, and is easy to use. Shots are inconsistent, which is frustrating.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

The first one was rusty after a week, the second one made great coffee for two years and then somehow broke

Reddit▲ recommend

it is prefect for learning as well after a couple just started to mess with temp setting and made a big difference once I got all the basics down.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I had the same. Once in guarantee, ended up with a new machine. Now is the second time, out of guarantee.

Reddit▲ recommend

I'm happy to have it ready to go and don't find the taste difference worth the hassle of putting in the exact weight into the hopper every time

Reddit— neutral

the second shot was way slower, it needed 33s to get to 34g output, and it even had some kind of "bubbles" in the crema

Reddit— neutral

It's a competent machine that gets a lot of hate because it's not as fancy as the price tag would suggest it should be.

Reddit▲ recommend

It has been flawless and used daily (besides vacations, or when we are out of town) for that entire time. Zero issues. Makes solid espresso.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

The grinder is really bad. The motor isn't powerful enough to grind most freshly roasted beans.

Common problems & things to know

Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.

Redditⓘ good to know

I had the same issue so I reprogrammed the double shot button time because it used to cut off too fast.. I used a scale to make sure I was getting 36g of liquid when I reprogrammed it

Redditⓘ good to know

Are you aware of the program button on the machine? You can press that an the double button to program in your time. Set your scale up and then program the coffee that you're dialing in.

Redditⓘ good to know

I get the same, it takes longer to stop when I use the sage portafilter compared to a bottomless one. Think makes me think some of the delay is just the shot coming through the portafilter

Redditⓘ good to know

I do use a p,uck screen though, so not sure if that alters things. On that note, I would recommend a puck screen. I found it helped with consistency and my shower head screen is kept perfectly clean.

Redditⓘ good to know

Also don’t worry ab time and don’t worry ab perfect 1:2 ratio so much it just a starting point and then u make adjustments by taste only. And so manual shots not the pre programed double shot bc it will change significantly with in the next shot .

Redditⓘ good to know

It's stepless, but there's "notches" printed next to the handle. Commonly mistakenly called stepped. Owned one.

Redditⓘ good to know

I have the Barista Pro and always use the Manual shot mode. 5 seconds manual pre-infuse and then simply whatever it takes to get to 2:1 shot ratio on the scales. If the timing to achieve that is too short or long, I adjust the puck preparation accordingly.

Redditⓘ good to know

Yey itll keep dripping for a good while, hence I have to pull my cup out of the way when its finished

Redditⓘ good to know

I would recommend not keeping beans in the hopper for this reason. Plus it’s best to “hot start” your grinder by turning the grinder on and then tossing the beans into the active grinder. For this reason I also think it’s best to weigh your dose before and grind by dose.

Redditⓘ good to know

If the tamper is set to Razor depth then you may not be getting a full tamp if the dose isn't sufficient. Plus, if it ends up being an adequate fill, with the coffee fully compressed, the puck screen will end up pressing into the shower screen before brewing, crushing the puck's surface.

Redditⓘ good to know

When I got my pro, I set the grind to around 10/9 and could get 30s easily. Any lower and it choked. I then changed the internal from 6 5 to 3 and now I need external setting around 20 to get to 30s, lower than that and it chokes. So well the multiple range of grinder definitely make sense unlike what you claimed.
