Focusrite Scarlett Solo

Scored on 95 verified owner verdicts, from 384 comments read across 6 communities
TL;DR
Most owners rate the Scarlett Solo as a dependable, affordable entry point into recording, praising years of trouble-free use, solid build quality, and a preamp clean enough to drive an SM7B without a Cloudlifter. A meaningful minority push back, though, citing Windows driver headaches, insufficient gain and easy distortion on hot guitar or dynamic-mic signals, and preamp or power failures after a few years. Several owners who've used both the Solo and the 2i2 say the 2i2 is simply the better value with stronger software support. Overall it's seen as a solid, unremarkable workhorse rather than a standout, similar in quality to competitors like the Audient EVO4 or SSL and Arturia entry-level interfaces.

51% of 95 verified owners recommend the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, based on real owner verdicts aggregated from Reddit, enthusiast forums, and YouTube.

My first interface was a Scarlett and it was absolutely terrible. The quality sounded bad, there was a very noticeable delay when recording.

Reddit▲ recommend

4th gen Focusrite have the best micpres for home consumer products and you can't get anything just as good or better without spending significantly more.

Reddit— neutral

It's a decent interface. Considering you have cheap monitors, I doubt you have an expensive microphone. Don't worry, the Scarlett interface will do its job, and all your devices will work fine.

Reddit— neutral

it is a functional interface that’s inexpensive and you’ll notice a difference if you don’t have one. But it’s not an upgrade to anything except maybe an older gen

Reddit▲ recommend

I love mine, the issues i had with mine, I found are entirely due to my CPU/Mobo, and have nothing to do with either windows or my focusrite

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Solo doesn't have as good of software support as the 2i2, in addition to what others are saying. I've owned each, 2i2 is the way to go

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

it seems to be a well known issue to do with the drivers and windows 11 and nobody online seems to have had any luck fixing it

Reddit— neutral

It's fine. There won't be much difference u til you get to much pricier interfaces like a Universal Audio Apollo or something like that.

Reddit▲ recommend

Now I have the 4th Gen and use it directly as well without issue. But if I could use it with my 2nd Gen then I’m sure the 3rd is fine.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I’ve had to replace the Solo in 2 years. It’s a quick cheap alternative, but it may go out on you within two years.

Reddit— neutral

I would not use them if I wanted to track in great audio quality but for what you have in mind they should be perfectly reasonable.

Reddit▲ recommend

Scarlett interfaces are just fine - IDK who sold you that load but you might want to consider their advice in the future

Reddit▲ recommend

My preferred way! I sit on the sofa with it and IEMs. Really good for playing along with a video or songsterr as well.

Reddit— neutral

I wouldn't say it is anything special and SSL, Audient, Arturia, even UA all have similar products in the same price range

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

My Scarlett had a lot of problems losing power. I used it for like 6 years and was frustrated by it regularly.

Reddit▲ recommend

Nothing wrong with a used (or new) 2 channel Scarlett and put the extra cash into mic, flat response headphones, etc.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Avoided the 4th Gen Solo, especially if you’re using a gain-hungry dynamic mic. The preamp is weak.

Reddit— neutral

Just had one issue where after I updated the firmware, the direct monitoring broke and only output on one side

Reddit— neutral

Scarlett has become the default interface recommendation over the years because it's decent and affordable.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I haven't been impressed with the lower end focusrite interfaces, but some people love them.

Reddit▲ recommend

I have this! Im still learning how to use a daw, but the latency is really low and its easy to just plug in and play

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Way too easily might I add. My stock Harley Benton strat redlines mine with zero input gain

Reddit— neutral

I have solo. Works fine. But if I were to buy second time I’d go for 2i2 for the higher gain on mic input.

Reddit▲ recommend

Somehow my fakin ears can hear difference in audio quality with ASIO drivers. Sound is more natural and crispier.

Common problems & things to know

Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.

Redditⓘ good to know

I never understood the worry about having enough gain, the digital world gives infinite gain. Just get what you can with your setup and boost more from your computer. Sounds the same.

Redditⓘ good to know

People love to hate it because it’s popular and cheap. You need about 55dB to drive SM7B mic which is on the higher end of the gain knob. Also used to not have loop back which was super annoying.

Redditⓘ good to know

Got it going with the 4th gen Scarlet Solo since it’s just me recording vocals for a start! Getting a bundle from Wali World for 290 with a mic stand and pop filter

Redditⓘ good to know

That’s the confusing part is they have generally been right about most their computer advice in the past but I guess this was a rare miss on their part. I’ll definitely keep the Scarlett in consideration

Redditⓘ good to know

They now make a Shire SM7dB that has a built-in CloudLifter. Otherwise, you'll need to get a Standalone to boost the signal because of the high impedance.

Redditⓘ good to know

From personal experience, when one of my inputs died, it was nice to have a second as backup. Probably not everyone’s experience but I was sure grateful.

Redditⓘ good to know

What you can do is create an aggregate device using 3rd party software to combine the Focusrite and USB mic as one device but there’s no point in doing that unless you have something plugged into the Focusrite.

Redditⓘ good to know

Yes I went through the whole easy start setup guide they have, I uninstalled old software and I installed focusrite control 2 and the proper drivers

Redditⓘ good to know

Alright, thank you. I'll fix that. I do have guitar headphones I can use. I must have been doing that before. I'm not sure how I didn’t know that.

Redditⓘ good to know

" but I’ve been told (in the past) that that’s like getting $150 Dollar tires to put on an expensive sports car." whoever told you that is a clown

Redditⓘ good to know

That’s all about the number of inputs and outputs you need. If you’re only going to be record one mono source at a time, go with the cheapest one!

Redditⓘ good to know

Make sure you are recording in stereo not digital. The left channel is the microphone and the right is the instrument port. At least one Windows.

Redditⓘ good to know

Right click or whatever the mac equivalent is, on the red circle(record armed) button, make sure Monitor Input is checked, and Record input (Audio or MIDI) is checked and also hover over > Input: Mono > select your input.

Redditⓘ good to know

As I learned yesterday, it's because the 4th gen solo still uses the older preamps, whereas the 2i2 has the updated ones which are better.

Redditⓘ good to know

I've used both 20 years, including a Focusrite-recorded bass line that was part of a #6 Billboard charting song. DM me if you need.

Redditⓘ good to know

Absolutely agree Technically though, you can create an aggregate device on Mac and actually can output through the Mac speakers

Redditⓘ good to know

To add to this - if you plan on streaming/recording in OBS, the 4th gen scarlet series says they have loopback, so you dont need to deal with additional vst's to route digital outputs to OBS. Saved me some computing power & a headache

Redditⓘ good to know

Most people do not have treated rooms. So "boost more" from your computer is just going to introduce a ton of noise.

Redditⓘ good to know

It's milliseconds, pretty usable. Beringer though, the delay is terrible, but they give you a direct output button.

Redditⓘ good to know

You can see signal is getting into your DAW so the Focusrite is not the issue. You need to dig into your DAW and you're audio configuration, the track is setup to Record, the monitoring setting. Read on how to record audio with the DAW you're using.

Redditⓘ good to know

Dumb question, when you do this are you both wearing headphones? Do I just need a headphone jack splitter?

Redditⓘ good to know

you can use voicemeeter, route your audio to it and then use voicemeeter to route all that into the DAW

Redditⓘ good to know

huh. did they downgrade the solo in 4th gen? I have the 3rd gen and there is a XLR AND guitar jack.

Redditⓘ good to know

People do like it. Gear snobs hate everything, especially themselves. Don't listen to gear snobs.
