“No problems with stalling on the home one, but the one the office stalls regularly.”
“The Gen 2 burrs were a BIG step up, and along with the ionizer moved the ODE from a grinder I needed used to recommend, to now being my go-to filter recommendation”
“I bought an ode grinder for $400 dollars and the motor died after using twice a day for two years. 1 year warranty. Fellow did not offer parts to fix or repair.”
“Darker roasts (oilier beans) still don't descend into the grinder”
“the messiness of the grinder isn't a huge deal”
“Overall it's a very solid grinder and it works very well.”
“the Gen 2 burrs are probably my favorite filter burrs right now for an all around.”
“the grinder seems to be the one thing they sell at a competitive price”
“I stand in front of the Ode with a chopstick and I have to prod and poke the beans through and hope I get them all before the auto-stop kicks in.”
“I got the Gen 2 grinder for Christmas last year and love it, only gripe is how much static there still is despite the anti-static tech.”
“I have to repeatedly smack the side of the grinder with the palm of my hand as it's grinding, to make sure that all the beans drop down into the grinding chamber.”
“I’ve had this since the end of December and it’s worked great.”
“Just don't use the fins.”
“Excellent design, quiet and easy to clean. Very happy.”
“even setting 11 is too fine for pour over specially when I make 700g water. Water stuck in half way and taking much longer time. And it get bitter.”
“have really been enjoying the Gen 2's since they were made available to the kickstarter backers. Fantastic burr set!”
“My Ode 2 sprays grinds all over my counter and makes a huge mess.”
“the fins are just dumb”
“I'm getting much nicer cups with this against my old Encore with M2 burrs”
“I just think the prices are absurd for coffee grinder.”
“Excited to see the new review. Have had it about a week, and so far I'm a little torn. I've had maybe 1 or 2 decent cups, but I'm just getting very thick feeling astringent brews at regular ratios”
“I agree with the comments you made about the dosing cup, lid and fins completely! Mine did jam once which was odd”
“It stopped working properly mid-September.”
“I have the Ode 2 grinder (which I love)”
Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.
“Seems normal but you should calibrate it so zero is 5 clicks off chirp. Fellow has videos on how to do this. Otherwise you are gonna have to grind really high for pour over like 8-9”
“Calibration is still an option. I have the Fellow for around 3 weeks and didn't change the settings from stock. I'll give it a try. At the moment I grind on 8/9 and it's get bitter.”
“From my perspective, the whole point of the moccamaster is to create the best value of convenience and quality. If I want to be super fastidious then I'll save that for pour overs”
“I'd say it has a sweeter profile compared to the ZP6, which I found much more acidity forward, but it could be that the Ode is a touch more forgiving with stuff like water chemistry.”
“Yes. BS, you won't taste it. But hey, you might be one of the 0.0001 % with such a delicate palate as to taste micron differences. I'm using 3 setting for 25 g, so same size reduction.”
“I remember a thread on here where the engineer who designed the Ode 2 said he feels it doesn’t produce great coffee until you’ve put 5 to 6 pounds of beans through the burrs”
“Mine was making surging sounds. Unplugging it and plugging it back in fixed it. It's happened a couple of times, usually when we have a power blip when storms pass through.”
“I didn’t do any extra alignment- which is why I was so shocked by how the machine responded! I’m weighing whether to do it or not. I’m worried if I try then I might ruin a perfect accident”
“I have an Ode 2 and, like others have said, Ethiopians do this kind of thing. Try Cafec Abaca filters. It’ll make the world of difference for this type of bean and similar.”
“A careful burr alignment made a substantial difference for mine. It's been very consistent ever since, and changes in grind settings are definitely noticeable. Worth the time it takes IMHO.”
“Just reporting back I did 206 at 5.3 clicks and 1:16 ratio and it was a marked improvement! Will try a little higher temp next time and keep the other variables the same.”
“You need to re-callibrate the burrs. Search on Fellow's youtube channel on how to do it. It is really easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgC6JipvV48&list=PLmypTqbQ9bkjaCRp1PZxOEjPOr20kI9al”
“This is the noise they tell you it shouldn't make when you perform a calibration I'm surprised but also somehow not surprised at all that it came this way out of the box”
“Seasoning matters. Grind distribution matters. Your 750 microns may have a certain distribution that won't match the ode 2's microns. I used to start at 4 but settled on 5 for 13 to 20g brews.”
“I feel like my Ode 2 runs a little courser than most people’s. I’m drinking an Ethiopian right now that I ground at 3.2 and for 15g and it still drained in under 3 min.”
“This is my experience too: prefer clean washed, well extracted, and also prefer the turbos. No funky fermentation for me, pls. :) I'm also fine with light "honey", or not too funky naturals. :)”
“I grind at 5.1 for my moka pot but I have ssp multi purpose burrs in it. (Have it calibrated that the lowest setting is one click before touch so the lowest setting is the true lowest possible)”
“This is simply not true. Former owner of all three. All three grinders perform better or worse compared to each other depending on the coffee. Blunt generalized statements like this are not valid.”
“Ahhh this is what I’m having trouble with now. I followed the steps to recalibrate and now it’s producing more fine grind size. I’ve reached out to their tech team”
“I have the Virtuoso so now I’m so curious how my pour overs would be with the Ode 2. I’m confused by your sentence “with the Ode it was a challenge to get brews”.”
“It took 11 pounds of my most hated coffee beans (done out of spite, mostly) before the burrs (SSP MP in my case) were seasoned enough to stop tasting astringent AF. You WILL need to season the burrs.”
“I also struggled. Here is the first basic recipe that worked for me: 1:16.5 bloom 1:3 for 60s at 207F batch 3 pulses, 35 seconds, 195, 190, 185 Ode 2 grind at 8”
“Aligning the burrs is a huge PITA - expect to spend an afternoon and hope you won’t need to - but will dramatically increase grind consistency and reduce fines.”
“That's what I also thought, but would it make sense that I can over extract coffee from the Ode with a shorter TBT (ie 2:30) and get a somewhat balanced cup with Wilfa with a much longer TBT even 3:30+?”
