Embody

TL;DR
Owners who get the Embody dialed in describe the back support as unlike anything else they have sat in, and several credit it with ending back or sciatic pain that other chairs could not fix. It does not arrive that way. Owners repeatedly say the first sit feels strange and that the chair only comes right after setting back tension, back angle, and seat depth, and a few never got there no matter what they changed. Where owners divide is the seat and body size: the complaints cluster below the waist rather than on the back, and two owners returned it outright, one over shoulder-blade pressure and one for feeling too big for the chair.

66% of 41 verified owners recommend the Embody, based on real owner verdicts aggregated from Reddit, enthusiast forums, and YouTube.

What owners like
  • The back is the most praised part by a wide margin, forming to the spine instead of pressing on one spot.
  • Owners with long-running back and sciatic pain report it going away after switching.
  • Holds up for the long haul: owners at seven and ten years say it still looks and works like new.
  • A clear step up for anyone coming from a gaming chair or a mid-tier task chair.
  • Most owners who paid the money say they stopped thinking about the price once the chair was set up.
What owners flag
  • It feels wrong out of the box, and for some owners no amount of adjustment ever fixes it.
  • The seat, not the back, draws the complaints: a pan that runs small, hard plastic where the legs rest, foam that flattens.
  • The soft parts wear before the frame does, with reports of flattened padding, fabric wear, and creaking under heavy daily use.
  • Body fit is pass-or-fail, and broader owners reported upper-back pressure rather than support.
  • A minority call it overpriced for the comfort delivered, including one who would buy a Steelcase Leap instead.
Who it's for
A great fit if
  • Desk workers with ongoing back or sciatic pain who have already struck out with other chairs
  • Buyers willing to spend an hour on back tension, back angle, and seat depth before judging the chair
  • People sitting eight- to ten-hour days who treat the chair as the thing they use most
  • Anyone upgrading from a gaming chair or a basic office task chair
Look elsewhere if
  • Anyone who wants a plush seat to sink into, since owners describe it as a chair that holds posture rather than one that cushions
  • Larger-framed or broad-shouldered sitters, the group that reported upper-back pressure and returns
  • Value-first buyers, who can get a competent chair for less according to the owners who regret the price
  • Buyers who expect a chair to work correctly the moment it is unboxed

“I love mine, probably will never buy another chair again. The back support it provides for anyone who needs something a little more specialized is unmatched by anything else on the market.”

“The chair itself is very very comfortable, but I always got pain in my upper back / shoulder area from sitting in it, I felt like I was too big for the chair to properly support me.”

“One thing I like to stress about this chair is it is not comfortable. It is great for posture but it forces you to sit properly (which is why I got it).”

“After a day of use? It's pretty comfortable.. but tbh, not $2500 comfortable. $150 comfortable? Absolutely. $500 comfortable? Questionably”

“I love my Embody. People complain it’s too expensive, but I spend more time sitting in that chair than anything else in my life. For something that I spend 40% of my life in, it’s worth $1200.”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“I've had mine for 6 months now. Bought it for $1250. It's a good chair. Worth the price? Not so much. If I were to do it again, I'd probably get a Steelcase Leap and save $400.”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“I returned mine as well, as it was bothering my shoulder blades. Certain chairs just won’t work for some and be perfect for others. I am now using the Sayl which I think feels 10x better to me vs the Embody.”

Reddit— neutral

“The back part of this chair is amazing and form to my back just fine it’s the seat what’s the issue for me right now”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I have had an embody for about 2 years now and I can agree with you that it isn't the most comfortable chair but it's never uncomfortable. I like my chair”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“Yeah me too. I'm hoping I will adjust to it. I've had it only for about 2 months. But I also think part of it is how slippery the material is.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“The Embody cushions my back where it actually hits the chair and allows me to stretch, move around, and adjust my position while still providing support.”

Reddit— neutral

“I will say the seat pan extender is the only thing I miss. The depth and width allowed me to sit cross-legged.”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“I am also an Embody hater. I own one and it's the most overrated piece of shit I've ever used.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I only spent $1250 shipped directly from the factory with a whole lot of upgrades, and it was more than worth it to me. Not sure if most would agree.”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“Not a bifl. The ass pad on mine wore out (the foam) in less than 2 years of 10 hour days.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“Swiped my co-worker's Embody while he was on vacation (with permission) and it was night and day difference. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“I had the EXACT same thing just FYI. I returned the chair. If you look under the chair your legs are resting on hard plastic. The suspended part of the chair is actually only 18.5 inches which means your body has to be 16 inches or less to take advantage of it. The chair is too small.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I love my chair but started feeling some pressure in the lower back. Slapped the height adjustment all the way down and BOOM. I'm so comfy now”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“Embody felt great for two weeks but the adjustments were not for me.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“Brilliant chair, no pain or whatsoever. Only complain would be the fabric wear but with that much use I don’t really complain.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I have had essentially 0 sciatic nerve pain in the 6 months since getting this chair. For me it was absolutely worth it.”

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

“The embody destroyed my lower back no matter what adjustment I made.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I love the chair... such a huge upgrade from my old Dx Racer fromula gaming chair... my ass and spine are blessed now.”

Reddit▲ recommend

“I have both in home. I love my HM Embody, but the Steelcase has the 4D armrest that I mis in my HM when I switch.”
