Aqara Video Doorbell G4

TL;DR
Most owners who stick with the G4 describe it as dependable once it is dialed in, praising clear video, a snappy live feed, easy HomeKit pairing, and a housing that shrugs off rain, heat, and cold over years of use outdoors. A sizable minority runs into a very different experience: the doorbell drops its link to the chime and cycles offline and online, often needing a hard power cycle or firmware update to recover, and for some it never fully resolves. Battery life is another sore spot, with some owners burning through AA batteries in days rather than months. A smaller group reports units dying outright within weeks, overheating in direct sun, or complaining about the narrow, horizontal field of view compared to rivals like Ring.

39% of 97 verified owners recommend the Aqara Video Doorbell G4, based on real owner verdicts aggregated from Reddit, enthusiast forums, and YouTube.

  • Buyers who plan to hard-wire it instead of running on batteries
  • Owners who want local SD card storage on the chime instead of cloud
  • Homes with mild sun exposure where overheating and disconnects are less likely
Look elsewhere if
  • Anyone relying on batteries alone, since owners report them draining in days
  • Buyers in hot, sun-facing installs prone to overheating and dropped connections
  • Owners who want a fix-and-forget device, given recurring firmware and chime-to-doorbell disconnects

My biggest issue with G4 is distance connection with the chime and in HomeKit, anytime some one rings the door, I can’t see the camera feed for a few seconds on HomeKit.

Reddit▲ recommend

the video quality and talk functions in the home app are great, so far i have no complaints with that and it's also really responsive.

Biggest complaint right now with G4 is overheating issues (unfortunately my doorbell gets hit by the sun in afternoon/evening) and sometimes it drops connection for a couple of minutes

Reddit— neutral

I have the G4 and it does its job. However the negatives like others mentioned are: it’s clunky, orientation, doesn’t use existing chime.

Reddit▲ recommend

I use XTAR 4150mWh batteries and have recharged them once since installing in November 2024, and they are still showing >90% now.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

tuve el G4 y de vez en cuando, con cortes de luz o cuando al G4 le parecía, se perdía el enlace tanto con la campanilla como con las app de Aqara y de Apple HomeKit.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I started with batteries without any issues for weeks. Switched to wired (installation done by a pro). Then it instantly had this issue.

Reddit— neutral

Got it wired and never looked back, amazing device now. Was terrible on batteries, smoked through batteries in less than 2 weeks.

Reddit▲ recommend

I also like the feature of having the chime where I want it instead of using the previous door bell chime.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

Beware the Aqara. I gave up on it's crappy Wi-Fi and link from chime to doorbell, both of which failed constantly. Returned.

I bought a silicone case for my G4. Aqaras own case actually. It handles rain perfectly, no problem so far. I live in Sweden.

Reddit▲ recommend

I've never had an issue with overheating on my G4 and when the suns out it get sun all day long

Reddit▲ recommend

I Have been using G4 for almost a year, and it's battery powered. It really has no downsides

Reddit— neutral

I really wish that chime unit had wall prongs on it. Or at least some other way to power it without running a cable to it.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

my G4 also died very soon after purchase. the prospects sounded amazing but in practice it was a waste of $100

Reddit▲ recommend

I have been using mine for two weeks now without any connectivity or power issues so far

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

I also have this issue now and then to the point that I consider other brands. It is really annoying.

Reddit— neutral

The Aqara works. Not sure it’s my long term solution, but for now, at least I have a functional camera at the front door.

Reddit▲ recommend

if you’re still using the G4 and are happy with it (as was I) then it’s a tough call

Reddit— neutral

The old g4 had on device face detection which was crap but at least it worked from time to time with automations.

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

wired connection can access SD card but no live video…. On firmware …0028.0046, think of returning…

Reddit▼ don’t recommend

terribly disappointed in the range/connectivity between the doorbell and the chime repeater

Reddit▲ recommend

The 6 AA batteries last surprisingly long. Probably about 4-5 months on average

I can have a full 10 days worth of recordings of all motion which triggers all the time and it’s fine still

Common problems & things to know

Practical notes owners raise — setup, quirks, and issues to watch for. They don't say whether the person likes the product, so they're not counted in the score, but they inform the pros, cons, and who it's for.

Redditⓘ good to know

Thanks. Mine was acting up and not recording but still showing the live view. I deleted old recordings and it’s now working like it did. I have the latest atv 4k and the Aqara m2 hub.

Redditⓘ good to know

But not always. So far I have not found any connection with the settings. However, I also have the impression that it works much worse after connecting an external power supply (12V DC).

Redditⓘ good to know

I’m working with support to try and pinpoint the issue. When it jumps they remote diagnose the camera and say there is a corrupted file. It’s not my cards as brand new Sandisk and Samsung.

Redditⓘ good to know

I also had slow loading of the live feed in the Home app. I switched my default hub from a HomePod Mini to Apple TV 4K (Thread version), and it loads a lot faster now.

Redditⓘ good to know

Hi, got the same problem when someone rings at my door. The Cam lose the connection with the chime and i need to restart the chime to connect again the cam.

Redditⓘ good to know

It‘s the night vision! I found the Problem after writing the Support. When i turn on night Vision the light is blinking blue and i cant ring the doorbell.

Redditⓘ good to know

Just tried everything. But noticed when it’s dark the device makes a clicking sound every few seconds. I think there’s an error with the night vision ….

Redditⓘ good to know

However it’s working fine in the Aqara app, feeds and all. The only thing I notice is the reported issue of it reverting to Smooth (low resolution).

Redditⓘ good to know

The G410 is the same mount I think the hub though has a longer range I think you can position it 10 meters away from the doorbell vs 5 with the G4.

Redditⓘ good to know

I am a user in Hong Kong. I started using g4 on February 19. The wiring has been fine. It was until the blue light of the door bell twice in the last week that it had to be restarted. Could it be a software problem?

Redditⓘ good to know

Hi, I had the same problem. Try turning off “Settings -> More Settings -> Prevent Accidental deletion” in the Aqara Home app. It hasn't disconnected for me for 3 days now. (I use it on external power WITHOUT batteries)

Redditⓘ good to know

I already did that last summer when i kept getting barged with 100 notifications a day when it would heat up during the 40 degree summer heat

Redditⓘ good to know

J’ai exactement le même problème depuis quelques semaines… Je n’ai rien changé dans les réglages, j’ai toujours utilisé les mêmes piles Duracell et au remplacement suivant, des piles, celles-ci ont duré quelques jours !!

Redditⓘ good to know

Why do you think my Aqara Doorbell G4 doesn’t find a firmware update? I’m running version:1.0.7_0008.0008 and it says it’s up to date.

Redditⓘ good to know

I tried the same thing. I turned on the VPN on my router but it still didn’t work. I suppose the device has a built-in GPS signal.

Redditⓘ good to know

I had the same thing, but updating the G4 to the latest firmware, then power cycling the chime, doorbell and HomePod solved this.

Redditⓘ good to know

UK user here and I’ve woken up to the doorbell being offline after 2 days of use. In the Aqara app the chime says the Wi-Fi signal is good at 60%, and the doorbell to chime signal is strong as it’s they’re about 30cm apart through a wall.

Redditⓘ good to know

My issues were caused due to a wrong power supply rating. Check the specs. Since I changed it all the issues went away.

Redditⓘ good to know

Duracell alkaline disposables. Switched to rechargeable now but honestly apart from less wastage no real difference.

Redditⓘ good to know

Also have the g4. I do get heat notifications early in the day. The front of my house is direct sun from 7a-2p ish.

Redditⓘ good to know

Chime unit is powered from USB-C and includes USB-C to USB-A cord so you can plug to any unused 5W USB power brick

Redditⓘ good to know

Granted, it’s only been connected with no issues for 3 hours, but we shall see what happens. I have kept auto night mode on too, as I would prefer to have colour during daylight hours, so switching to always on or always off is a big no no for me.

Redditⓘ good to know

Did you set it up in the Aqara app? Mine would only record in HomeKit when it wasn’t set up in the Aqara app.

Redditⓘ good to know

I have mine but it doesn’t work, pairs with HomeKit fine but there is never any video response. Any ideas?
