The connected product penalty

Across 69 categories and 60,773 first-hand owner verdicts, 57% of owners recommend products that need an app, an account or a pairing to do their main job, against 68% for products that do not. What the complaints show is that the gap is not about things breaking more often. It is about the part that connects.

Every verdict is a first-hand comment from an owner on Reddit or an enthusiast forum, individually vetted and quoted byte-exact; YouTube comments and affiliate blogs are kept out of the scores. A category qualifies at 5+ products and 200+ verdicts, and its rate is weighted by how many verdicts each product carries. “Connected” means the product needs an app, account, pairing, radio or firmware to do the thing it is for, labelled per category and listed in full below, so you can disagree with any call and recount. It is not that smart products break more

Scanning 10,610 negative owner verdicts for what the complaint is about, breakage lands at nearly the same rate on both sides: 8% of complaints about connected products mention something breaking or dying, against 9% for the rest. The difference sits in the parts that exist only because the product connects.

What a buyer can do with this

The penalty is not an argument against buying anything smart. It is an argument for asking what the connection buys you. A air purifier that never asks for an account sits at 87% because the only thing it can do is the thing it was bought for.

Where a category is weak all the way through, like security cameras at 30%, the honest reading is that owners are unhappy with the current state of the category rather than with one bad model. Buying the best-reviewed option in it still means buying into apps, accounts and firmware that a lot of owners regret.

And when the connected version costs more than the plain one, the premium is buying the layer that owners complain about most. Batteries and charging show up in 10% of complaints about connected products against 1% for the rest, and a cast-iron pan has no battery to degrade.

Frequently asked

What is the connected product penalty?

Across 69 product categories, 57% of owners recommend products that need an app, account, pairing or firmware to do their main job, against 68% for products that do not. That is an 11-point gap, measured over 60,773 first-hand owner verdicts.

Which product categories do owners rate worst?

Security Cameras (30% of 241 verdicts), Video Doorbells (38% of 278 verdicts), Smart Thermostats (46% of 704 verdicts), Wireless Earbuds (48% of 2,440 verdicts), Gaming mice (49% of 1,561 verdicts). Every one of them needs an app or an account to work.

Which product categories do owners rate best?

Air Purifiers (87%), Dutch Ovens (86%), Coolers (84%), Cast Iron Skillets (82%), Fishing Rods (82%). Not one of them needs an app, an account or a pairing to work.

Are smart products built worse than ordinary ones?

The complaints say no. In negative owner verdicts, breakage and build failure are mentioned at about the same rate for both groups (8% connected, 9% unconnected). What separates them is the connected layer: apps, pairing, firmware and accounts appear in 12% of complaints about connected products against 3% for the rest, and battery or charging in 10% against 1%.

How were these numbers measured?

Every score comes from first-hand owner verdicts posted on Reddit and enthusiast forums, individually vetted and quoted byte-exact. Category rates are weighted by how many verdicts each product carries. Categories need at least 5 products and 200 verdicts to qualify. YouTube comments and affiliate blogs are excluded from the scores.
